About Oppose the Landfill

Inspiring Change

Oppose the Landfill was formed in July 2022 to formally oppose the opening of the old Hopewell Landfill on Plank Road

Summary:

York County Solid Waste Authority would like to re-open the old Hopewell landfill on Plank road.  They’ve stated that their goal is to reprocess old ash from the site, then begin bringing down ash from York.  This landfill was an EPA Superfund site from 1987-2005 due to groundwater contamination and was ultimately shut down due to the contamination.  The new proposal states that the site life is expected to be 54 years. Additionally, their proposal indicates the current elevation is 970 feet, the proposed new peak of the landfill will be 1050 feet.  This would create an 80 foot mountain of waste.  There would be an extreme disruption to recreation and wildlife in the area.

We’ve spoken to residents in the immediate area of the Landfill who indicated that their water is still regularly tested by YCSWA and that it periodically fails tests for high levels of Trichloroethane.  YCSWA still provides bottled drinking water to affected residents.  From the current landfill site there are four creeks.  One flows North into Spring Valley park, one flows east into Rambo Run in Felton, the southern and western creeks flow into Stewartstown and Ebough Creek.  Many of us, including Stewartstown Borough and Stewartstown Station rely on well water, well water that is fed at least partially fed by these creeks and Aquifers.

Reflections

It's a health place for our health.

It's a health park!

A place for Families to come to play sports

Walk their pets, have a wedding at Allegro

Let children play in the playground

Have a family picnic

or, just come listen to the sounds of nature

The balance of nature has been restored to this ground

A bald eagle was soaring high above the complex on a recent day

As if, it was sending a message.

"Please leave us alone"

The bluebirds were warbling their songs, as they meander about

Henry David Thoreau has written these words

"The Blue Bird carries the sky on its back"

And so it shall remain.

Thank you Citizenry

Thank you Hopewell Township supervisors, and YCSWA for allowing it to remain so.

And are you concerned about the adverse affect on Southern York County’s public health?

What about water & air pollution?

Or plummeting property values?

On top of the destruction of the wildlife habitat.

Maybe you’re most concerned about the next generation, and their exposure during recreation, at their neighboring home, or at Stewartstown Elementary School—located less than a mile from the Landfill Site.

And the additional noise, traffic and heavy load on our infrastructure.

If so, join us in our efforts to Oppose the Landfill.
